San Francisco is a situated on the west coast of America in the state of California and is home to some of the most iconic landmarks in the USA.
How to get there
You can book a flight direct to San Francisco from London Heathrow or you can fly indirect from other London airports, Manchester, Glasgow or any other major UK airport. Most of the major airlines fly to the city and this competition ensures that you can book a cheap flight to San Francisco. If you book far enough in advance you should be able to pick up a return flight for a little over £300.
When to go
The temperature here is fairly comfortable, verging on the cool, all year round. The summer months don't really make it above 20C, due to the persistent fog, and in the winter it rarely will drop into single figures. June, July, August and September don't see much rain but will feel damp due to the fog, the winter months can see a fair bit of rainfall.
What to do
Film lovers will soon feel at home as so many well-known movies have used San Francisco as a backdrop, taking advantage of, or perhaps helping to create, some of the many famous sites.
Top of the list must be the Golden Gate Bridge, which is over two and a half kilometres long, spanning the opening of San Francisco Bay.
Public transport in the city is a tourist attraction in itself and you should make sure you take a ride on both a cable car and a streetcar during your time there.
San Francisco is best seen from the bay and there are many harbour tours of varying length to choose from. It's a good place to start your visit and gives you a chance to get your bearings. Most of the harbour tours will allow you a good view of Alcatraz Island and its infamous prison however to explore Alcatraz Prison properly you can take a specific island tour.
A good area to spend some time is Fisherman's Wharf, which is full of entertainers, bars, restaurants and shops and is also home to Pier 39 where you can catch the harbour cruises.
If you're visiting the west coast of America make sure you put San Francisco on your list. To get a good deal on the infamously expensive hotels try a San Francisco hotelsearch on dealchecker.
