Central Market - largest in the Baltic!

posted by fhice on 17 September 2008 at 16:53

We found great bargains at the Central Market. It's the largest market in the Baltic and located in the strange semi-cylindrical buildings near the bus station - they're converted Zeppelin hangars. They sell food produce but even if you're not buying it's a lively place to visit.

dealchecker's guide to Riga

Since Latvia's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 the city of Riga has blossomed. The cosmopolitan capital was considered the 'Paris of the north' at one time and is working hard to regain that title. Riga has a rich history being older than Stockholm and St Petersburg. It is developing a real buzz so now's a great time to visit.

Getting to Riga
As Riga becomes more of a tourist hot spot an increasing number of airlines are offering cheap flights. Riga is serviced by a good range of scheduled and budget airlines. You'll also find a range of hotels to meet every budget. Summer and spring are definitely the best time to visit because you get long days and daytime temperatures can be quite balmy. Winter on the other hand is colder and darker, but flight and hotel prices reflect this.

Getting acquainted with Riga
Riga is just 12km from the Baltic Sea, but nearby at Jurmala the beaches have a Mediterranean feel offering quite a contrast. The city is made up of an Old Town and a New Town and is broken up by the Daugava River and the city canal which is a popular place to catch some sun in summer. It also has a large port. While the New Town is the business centre, the Old Town is the most interesting for tourists, boasting cobblestone streets and grand squares. You will also notice a lot of Germanic art nouveau architecture which is recognised on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

What to do in Riga
Look across at the Old Town from the other side of the river - it's a great view; visit the Dome Cathedral, it dates back seven centuries and is the largest church in the Baltics - the organ recitals are worth catching; visit St Peter's Church which once had the highest wooden tower in Europe and offers a great view of the city and the sea.

Riga also boasts lovely city parks, a canal and well preserved Jugendstil architecture. While most of the city has shaken off its Soviet history and spruced itself up, the Central Market in the Old Town is a good place to get a feel for its former life. It's housed in giant former zeppelin hangars.
