dealchecker’s guide to Bordeaux

Bordeaux

Bordeaux is an essential stop for wine connoisseurs and enthusiastic amateurs and with a good availability of cheap flights, it is a very accessible holiday destination.

What to do
Wine is no doubt the reason you're heading to Bordeaux and if it's not you'll soon develop a taste for it. As the capital city of one of the world's biggest wine producers Bordeaux is a very popular destination. An easy way to see the chateaux and do some wine tasting is to take a tour which can be booked in the UK or at the information centre once you arrive. Alternatively you can pick up a map and create your own tour. Fine wines such as Sauternes, Médoc, and St. Emilion are all grown in the region.

Aside from the exquisite wines and delicious cuisine - fois gras and canard are both regional specialities - you can see some incredible pre-historic caves and fortified medieval villages. Bordeaux has a rich history stretching back to Celtic times so it's a great area for history buffs and if you make it out to the coast you can even try wind surfing and kite surfing - followed of course by a glass of wine.

How to get there
Flights to Bordeaux take about one and a half hours and depart across the UK. Getting a cheap deal is easy because a wide range of scheduled, charter and budget airlines offer flights. Bordeaux flights are most expensive in summer from June to August when the weather is warmest, but Bordeaux has a mild climate so any time of the year is pleasant. Maximum summer temperatures are in the upper 20s and in spring and autumn they range from the mid-teens to the 20s.
